In the last year food prices have increased 11 % and on avarage we spend £41 per person per week. Food poverty is a hot topic of debate with food banks popping up all over the country. Yet, in the UK we throw away 15 million tonnes of eatible food every year. On Friday 2 May, SPAN hosted an event in partnership with Fareshare South West as part of the Bristol Food Connections programme focusing on food accessibility and how to avoid wasting food. The day started off with a cooking demo involving SPAN parents. The group prepared lunch for guests from SPAN and the wider Bristol community. Abdul from Sweetmart kindly donated a range of Asian snacks, Alex from East Bristol Bakery brough freshly baked bread and Abdul from Pak Butchers gave meat to the event.
Alex from East Bristol Bakery said: "Today's event at the Silai Centre is exactly what I hoped Bristol Food Connections would be about. Sharing experience and honest conversation about food".
At SPAN we are looking forward to more conversations about food and also some more healthy affordable communal cooking. Watch this space!
